What Does a Neurofeedback Session Feel Like? A First-Timer's Guide
· 5 min read · General
Nervous about your first neurofeedback session? Here's exactly what happens from start to finish, so you know what to expect.
Your First Neurofeedback Session: What to Expect
If you're considering neurofeedback but feeling uncertain about what it's actually like, you're not alone. Many of our clients felt the same way before their first session. Here's a detailed walkthrough so there are no surprises.
Before Your Session
There's no special preparation needed. You don't need to fast, avoid caffeine, or do anything unusual. Just come as you are. We do recommend wearing comfortable clothing and arriving a few minutes early for your first visit.
The Check-In (5-10 Minutes)
Each session starts with a brief conversation. We'll ask how you've been feeling since your last session (or discuss your health history if it's your first visit). This helps us track your progress and adjust your treatment plan if needed.
Sensor Placement (5 Minutes)
Small sensors are gently placed on your scalp. These read your brain's electrical activity—they don't send anything into your brain at this stage. The sensors are held in place with a small amount of paste that washes out easily. There's no pain or discomfort.
The Treatment (5-10 Minutes)
This is where the magic happens. The system sends micro-currents—1/300th the strength of a cell phone signal—that help your nervous system recalibrate. Here's what clients typically report during treatment:
- Most common: "I didn't feel anything" or "I felt deeply relaxed"
- Some clients: Feel a gentle tingling sensation
- Many clients: Feel so relaxed they nearly fall asleep
- No clients: Report pain or discomfort
After Your Session
You can return to normal activities immediately. There's no recovery time needed. Some clients report feeling:
- Calmer and more centered
- A sense of mental clarity
- Slightly tired (especially after the first session)
- More relaxed than usual
How Long Is a Visit?
Plan for about 30 minutes total, though the actual neurofeedback portion is only 5-10 minutes. The rest is check-in and sensor setup.
Common First-Session Questions
Will I feel different immediately? Some clients notice changes after the first session; others take a few sessions. Both are normal.
Can I drive after? Yes, absolutely. There are no impairments.
How often should I come? We typically recommend 1-2 sessions per week for the best results.
